So I saw the movie poster for that new Willy Wonka on somebody's LJ yesterday.

You don't have to look if you don't want to. )
I cannot... believe... what a bad poster this is.

Go on, guess.

...
I met a guy who had an albino ferret on a leash.
He let me hold it. We had a nice time.
His name is Richard.

Oh, and.

Colonel Sanders

I have found it!

This is the way I will draw someday. Right here, precisely like this guy.

This would of course require me to get good at watercolors. But there may yet be a way around that! o_o

I also found some other stuff of his that kinda works, but nothing like the first one. Here:

Welllll, that last post fell pretty flat, didn't it. Too bad for you, it was a hilarious song. :P

Yesterday the sun was shining, and the temperature was lovely, and it had rained a whole heck of a lot the day before. A perfect day for going outside and playing in the big sand and dirt deposits left in the artificial creek by the rain. :D You find all sorts of neat things.

I picked up a metal hoop about a foot and a half in diameter, some hyooj rusty nails, a pair of red sunglasses... and an impressive collection of snail shells.
For your viewing
and counting pleasure.

Yes, the sandy stuff was gross to go digging around in, with all the glass and soda/beer cans and whatnot. And yes, I ended up using my hands to do it. But when I brought them out from where I found them-- under a bridge where people go to do graffiti and probably some Other Things-- into the sunlight, set them on the rock above the water level, and sat there rinsing them out in the little stream, one by one... ah, it was good. It was just good. It was distinctly "the kind of thing I would do," for lack of a better way to put it, and I couldn't really remember the last time I'd done anything like that.

So I'm happy.

True Story

Oct. 9th, 2004 04:30 pm

As I sat in Wendy's, eating my lunch, I watched a man outside the window and across the street. He sat on the concrete, leaning against the back wall of a gas station, and probably had been there for a while. He had an old jacket and a cap, a full white beard, and a small bongo drum that he held in one arm and played with the other hand. He looked out across the small parking lots and just sat, not looking like he was going anywhere or had any reason to.

After a while, another guy came over to him and leaned over a little, talking to him. I was afraid he was going to try to make him move, because his shorts kind of looked like cop shorts, but he didn't. I saw the guy reach into his back pocket and pull out something roughly palm-sized and rectangular, and show it to the man, looking as though he was asking him something. There was some nodding, and a few more words between them.

Suddenly the guy started backing away from him. He raised a hand up, palm outward toward him to ensure some distance, and stopped on the opposite curb. He knelt carefully in front of the man and held the object up, squinting.

He took the man's picture.

Then he stood up again and left.

I've discovered a new hobby! :D You wait for it to get dark, and rain a lot, and you take off your shoes and socks and just go for a walk. In the rain.

It wasn't originally my idea-- I got talked into it by this girl named Stephanie who stood out on the porch with her arms spread out to the sky, going on about "This is LIFE! It makes you feel so ALIVE!" ...She'd make a great Theatre major. So after the random Enthusiastic Running Troop of Shirtless Guys came by, cheered a bit about how cool the rain was, and left, she and I and 3 other people decided it really WAS a good idea, so out we went... We splashed around in the poorly-drained streets, pretended there were fish in them, got our pictures taken, and sang all the rain-related songs we could think of (("If all of the raindrops...", "Raindrops keep falling on my head...", and "Singin' in the Rain." Yes, that was all.))

Pretty soon it stopped raining, so we were bummed 'cause we didn't feel very adventurous and cool anymore, but we decided we'd go see the Science Building with its combination of Fountain and Currently Enlarged River. This building and where we were are almost as far away from each other on campus as it is possible to be. And of course it started raining again on the way. At this point we had to resort to singing "Les Poissons" from The Little Mermaid because we didn't know any more songs with rain in them. And we were very, very cold.

When we got there, the fountain wasn't even on, and we had NO interest in walking all the way back... luckily, we found these random people in a yellow SUV who kindly took our wet selves back to the dorm. Keep in mind that this is at about 1 in the morning, and this girl is just giving her boyfriend from Colorado a driving tour of the campus. Coincidence? :O

Topic #2: Had a thing last night that, when I think about it, is really properly called a date, but I'm just not used to applying that term to anything I do. We went to see Napoleon Dynamite, just so we could say we had, and... wow. It was way more random than I'd heard. o_o A good 2/3 or more of the scenes were the type where some character starts doing something, the purpose of which is not immediately clear, but you expect they'll explain what it's about-- and then they just don't, and the scene is over. It didn't get old per se, but sheesh. They used that a lot.
We also used his car to pick up some of my art supplies, which made us late! :D So we ended up going to a showing that was an hour and a half later. I felt bad, but apparently I wasn't supposed to, so.

Topic #3: This isn't newly published or anything, I just never thought to post it: The Tournament of Things! :D The guy's layout is sort of unusual-- the plain arrows go chronologically through all his stuff, and the red icon-d arrows stay within a particular series. ((So use those.)) GO AND READ.

And finally, since my last post centered on a Bushism from the first debate, here is a Kerryism from the second debate!
"Senator Hagel of Nebraska said that the handling of Iraq is... in the zone of dangerous."

I'm waiting for something titled In the Zone of Dangerous-- a game, a song, a novel, anything-- to appear on Homestar Runner. It must happen.

I love my Psychology textbook. In the Lifespan Development or Whatever chapter, I found this series of pictures illustrating the idea of object permanence that was absolutely precious.

[livejournal.com profile] lalunaaj: Here are some pics I took to clarify the, um... whatever. Here's what it looks like.

The whole swingset ((from behind))
The one on the end
The one in the middle ((mine))
((Last one omitted for redundancy.))
The horshoe-shaped bit rotates inside the bit attached to the top bar, and the rest of the chain is pretty loosely connected to that, as you can see. I took a short video of this in motion; I can't upload it anywhere, but feel free to IM, email, or otherwise bug me for it. :)

So I tried it a couple more times today, and it behaved in the following manner(s):
1. The one to my right moved steadily opposite to mine, and the one to my left I couldn't really be sure of a pattern in. It might have been just a half-phase off. Later that same day,
2. The one on the right went kind of nuts, getting a little too high for itself and "bouncing" ((please know what I'm talking about...)). The other never really got very active, and in fact stopped altogether at one point. When I noticed this and mentioned it to some person I was showing it all to, it started back up again ((but still stayed fairly low)).

Again with the your thoughts!

Check it out, I have ANOTHER Odd Thing of the Moment. :O So. I was walking around tonight and discovered that this church nearby does, in fact, have a playground. As all good churches do. :) So this made me happy, because I'd been wishing there was a good swingset around. I will now describe the swingset.

It was built in pretty much the simplest shape imaginable, with the legs being single poles rather than the usual double-legs-in-an-upside-down-V setup. Two swings were hung in between the 2 supports, and one off to the edge and outside of them.

I took the one in the middle, because it was the only one more than a foot off the ground. :p And I started swinging. And as I was swinging, the other 2 empty swings started swinging too. Eventually, as I got slightly higher, these two got into, and stayed in, perfect synchronization with each other and opposite to myself-- both going backward as I went forward, and vice versa.

Eventually I decided it was time to leave. o_o

...Anyone have any thoughts?

I have 6 invites now. SIX. Does no one want them?

I took a nap this afternoon and got the best sleep I've had... ever. I had a mild but very convincing nightmare about one of my teeth being badly out of place and slightly loose, but then I woke up and it wasn't! Yay.

Music Update:
Today in Art: Coldplay.
Art class before that: Coldplay. Same album.
Roommate is playing: Coldplay, same album, looping certain tracks a few times. That or those tracks are just THAT repetitive.

ARRRRRRH.

This morning I noticed the inner corner of my left eye* was swollen just slightly. It gave me a subtle but still interesting new eye shape.

Image 1, 2 (about 180 K each)
Video ((to be uploaded soon, possibly, depending on the generosity of other people. The difference is clearer in it, that's all.))

(*Note that since these were taken facing a mirror, the eye to watch is in fact the one on the left.)

Also, the picture links in the previous entry are now fixed. They were originally uploaded on a 24-hour-only site. ((Who knew?))

Also also, I have five (5) Gmail invites. O_O You may ask me for one and I will give it to you!

Wowwwww this is so late

--So. Summer... happened. Astronomy was more or less cool, and Physics was more or less cool but ONLY because I discovered White Cheddar Cheez-Its (tm) in the vending machines and ate them in every class. Other than that it was not cool. o_o But now it's over! And I got an A and a B, respectively, FOR WHICH I was awarded this necklace. Everybody go oooooh.

Annnnnnd. So I'm back at school, taking the following classes:

Also, the Find of the Moment: A desktop wallpaper in two sizes. NOTE that this does not reflect on my personal opinions, but this line really is one of the great underappreciated moments in the history of the musical. I think.

And what a lovely birthday it was. :) Much better than I thought it was going to be, since I started out with basically no plans. Went last-minute camera shopping; got this one. For $200, whoo. Haven't decided on a name for it yet though... any suggestions?

(there is more) )

And I have also, with varying degrees of recentness*:

-Seen Troy.

Since everyone and their local columnist has chosen to comment pretty much exclusively on a) the Briseis bit and b) Brad Pitt in general, I take it upon myself to talk about something else.

...Odysseus. He is a cool man without a cool part. This is very sad. Done well, of course, but his full awesomeness just doesn't really get to shine through. :( Personally, if I had to choose between being credited with the Trojan Horse or the Flaming Twigballs of Death as a military strategy, I would have chosen the Flaming Twigballs of Death.

-Gotten my 2 sciencey courses at the community college. Astronomy starts this Tuesday :O!

-Painted a lovely mural for the Japan-themed Vacation Bible School. Mostly it has trees. And mountains.

-Decided to get a digital camera for mah birthday! Now I just need to know what kind to get. Anyone who has anything to say on that, speak!

There, a public entry, just for you.

*I liked 'recency' better, but decided against it. It means I'm a horrible decision-maker and I have no self-confidence. So there.
